Electrical panels are typically ignored in homes unless a circuit trips and the breaker needs to be reset.  The electrical panel is the center of the electrical system of homes and buildings and within many properties, it is still just a metal box with old style switches that need to be manually reset.  These outdated panels may also be consuming more energy than necessary, leading to higher utility bills.

If you think it is time to update your electrical panel, you may consider switching to a smart panel.  Nu-Trend provides smart electrical panel installation services in Schaumburg, IL and the surrounding north and northwest Chicago suburbs.  Our electricians can safely install new smart panels and ensure that they will function properly within the electrical infrastructure of your home.  We are certified to provide installation services for smart electric panels while following state and local safety codes.

What is a Smart Electrical Panel?

A smart electrical panel is a panel that is connected to the internet and wirelessly provides data on the storage, sourcing, and usage of energy in real-time.  They operate like regular electric panels but with online connectivity that makes it much easier to track electricity usage and even control each individual circuit from a smartphone app.  This allows you to turn off circuits when not in use and you can control the circuits from anywhere using the app.  If you remember that you left something plugged in after leaving home, you can simply turn off the circuit without returning home or you can plug your EV in when you arrive home but program the charging system to click on late at night, when utility rates are low.

Benefits of Switching to a Smart Electrical Panel

Smart electrical panels allow you to track and manage your energy usage in a way that is almost impossible with traditional electrical panels. Using a smartphone app, you can do the following simply by adjusting the power consumption:

Decrease phantom loads

Phantom loads refer to the power being consumed by appliances and electronic devices that are idle while plugged in.  Around 10-20 percent of your electric bill is from phantom loads from plugged in phone chargers, TVs, and printers, even if these devices are off.  With a smart electric panel, you can identify and shut off specific circuits to reduce energy consumption from phantom loads.

Load shifting

Every home has appliances that use a lot of energy such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, and microwaves.  With a smart electrical panel, you can set the circuits that power these appliances to shut off at certain times of the day when electricity rates are higher and turn them back on during times when the rates are reduced.

Control solar panels

If your home also uses solar panels, you can set your smart panel to feed power generated by the solar panels to specific devices in the home to save the solar energy stored in the battery.

Electric vehicle charging

If you have an electric vehicle charging station in your home, you can cut the power to the charger during peak hours and restore power during off-peak hours with lower electricity rates.  You can also set a cap on how much the charger will charge your battery.

Automate electrical settings

Within the app, you can automate your settings so that power from certain circuits is cut and restored at certain times of the day to help with reducing phantom loads, load shifting, solar energy control, and electric vehicle charging.  Optimizing the use of electricity through a smart home electric panel can save hundreds of dollars per year.

Martin Gardner

We had Nu-Trend add an EV charging port to our garage which was organized via Qmert, who contracted Nu-Trend to do the installation. I first met Dave, who came out to inspect the job site and put together a quotation; he is an excellent, Knowledgeable, and professional electrician. Shane at Nu-Trend took care of all the paperwork which includes a work permit from the local council and inspection after installation. Dave and a co-worker who was also excellent came to the house and did the installation in about half a day, the quality of the workmanship was impeccable. The work passed Inspection with flying colors.
